==Synopsis==

It's a long weekend and most of the winter snow should be melted.  It's time to get out and do some scrambles!  The scrambles we'll be aiming for are found in Matt Gunn's Scrambles in Southwest British Columbia guidebook.  You can find a copy of it in the VOC clubroom and for sale at MEC.

* '''Why is this Beginner Friendly?''' - this trip is beginner friendly in the sense that beginners to scrambling are welcome and we will be happy to teach and wait for them, not in the sense that it is easy or safe. See the VOC definition of beginner friendly [[Glossary|Here]].

==Work Hike Opportunities==

We are going to need a chainsaw to remove a log that has blocked the Phelix FSR.  If someone has access to one, it would make our trip a bit easier.

Should you want to get credit for a work hike, or just want to do a little work on one of our Huts, there's a Coleman lamp to be carried up there, and the outhouse needs some screws to be installed, and maybe a piece of wood.  Shouldn't take very long and won't interfere with mountaineering.  Talk to Roland or Geoff if you are interested.

==Itinerary==

====Saturday====
* Leave Vancouver at 8am (meaning you're driving across the Lions Gate bridge).
* Meet at the car parking area at noon.
* If we have 4WD high clearance vehicles, we can shuttle to the trailhead (this would save 6km of hiking, but is not necessary).
* Hike into the hut: approximately 5 hours without 4WD shuttling or 3.5 with 4WD shuttling

====Sunday====
* Scramble Mt Gandalf and Mt Aragorn: approximately 8 hours (Mt Aragorn is an optional easy add-on depending if you have the energy).

====Monday====
* Scramble Mt Shadowfax early in the morning: approximately 4 hours (also optional)
* Pack up and hike out

==Gear Required==

Remember, the VOC has lots of gear for rent in the clubroom. There are lots of ice axes, packs, helmets, etc... available in the clubroom.

==== Clothes ====
* 1 set of non-cotton clothes (just the one set)
* 1 additional warm thing (fleece / down jacket)
* water proof jacket (even if the weather is suppose to be good)
* toque (very important!!!)
* sturdy hiking boots
* sun hat
* gaiters
* an extra set of non-cotton clothes might be worth the weight if the weather is going to be bad

==== Shelter ====
* we'll be sleeping in the [[Brian Waddington Hut]] (sleeps 24)
* sleeping bag (it's summer and filling the hut with warm bodies should keep the hut warm)
* sleeping pad

==== Miscellaneous ====
* sunscreen
* headlamp (very important!!!)
* lip balm
* sunglasses
* camera
* bug net (works ''way'' better than bug juice, plus it doesn't wreck the environment or your stuff)
* toilet Paper 
* toothbrush
* lighter

==== Gear ====
* ice axe (You can borrow one from the club.  Check here for [[gear rental]] hours)
* helmet (You can borrow one from the club.  Check here for [[gear rental]] hours)

==== Food ====
* stove + pot + fuel + lighter (or share with someone)
* thing to eat out of
* spoon
* lunch, Dinner, Breakfast, Lunch (or join a food group)
* water (at least two litres!!!!)
* water purifier of sorts or a friend with one

and a pack to put it all in.

==Pre-Trip Meeting==

The Pre-Trip Meeting will be at 7:00pm on Wednesday, July 28th at Lacarno Beach (the bottom of Tolmie Street in Point Grey). The VOC weekly ultimate game happens then too.

* It is '''very''' important that you attend the pre-trip meeting as we'll be deciding on rides, accommodations, food groups, etc. We'll also decide the final number for this trip and we'll go over important details and skills.
* If you can't attend the Pre-Trip meeting but still want to go contact Todd at todd(at)phas(dot)ubc(dot)com and one of the drivers to make sure you have a ride.

== Vehicle List==

Sign up here if you have a vehicle. This pretty much guarantees you a spot on the trip.

Likely the last 6 km of road is not driveable because nobody cleared away the rock slide at km 0.5, or the fallen two-foot diameter tree just beyond the rock slide.  If you cross the Lions Gate Bridge at 8 am, you will park around 11:30am, and if the weather is anything like it was last weekend, you will totally fry your brain hiking in.  For a cooler experience, consider driving up Friday afternoon/evening and tenting beside the car, and you can start hiking early and get to the Hut before it gets too hot. 
   
* Anna Szeitz - me plus 3-4. I can drive if I have to, but since it means leaving my family devoid of a car for the  weekend, I would rather not.

* Nisan Haramati - me + 3-4 passengers + gear.  4 passengers will be a little cramped. Can bring roof rack too (let me know in advance, as I normally have it off). The car is a Subaru Forester, so depending on road conditions it may be able to make it through to the trailhead.
