Trip was good. The snow was excellent and more stable than I imagined. We didn't make it to the hut due to some tired members of our party, but we got a view from Panorama Ridge and the lake looks frozen all the way across. How much ice, I'm not sure.

Party of 7-9 heading to Burton Hut for New Years, 2008 (Dec. 30 - Jan 1). Comments? Questions?

Roland Hut ?? Do you mean Burton (Sphinx) Hut ?? Anyhow, I doubt that Garibaldi Lake will be frozen over by then.Champagne 12:07, 11 December 2007 (PST)
See wiki or bivouac for conditions of Garibaldi Lake. Probably also a good idea to leave some sort of contact details here... Bramvs 17:28, 11 December 2007 (PST)
Does anyone remember the earliest the lake has been reported to have been frozen? If it helps, it was not frozen on the January 13/14 weekend 2007. If you are really bold and decide to try anyway, you can climb a hill near the Battleship Islands and try to see if it is frozen all the way across. Ice screws can be useful at checking ice thickness. Scott Webster 18:14, 11 December 2007 (PST)
A few years ago I crossed it in Late December (29th or thereabouts) after a week long cold snap of -15C. It was solid, bare ice, not very thick, and a little bit scary. If you have a bivouac.com account there is a history of bulletins for garibaldi lake ice conditions here. Scott Nelson 08:55, 12 December 2007 (PST)

Yep, I meant the Burton Hut. Typo.

We are not necessarily planning to cross the lake. I have experience in the Garibaldi Lake area ski-touring, hiking and climbing. I'm also very familiar with maps, GPS and safety near ice from my experience with SAR and years of touring. Thanks for the info and the concern. I know that lots of people head into the park quite poorly prepared. I'll keep an eye on the bulletins and have some routes planned out. Thanks again. Cheers. Daryl
