We got a lot of work done on Reno-1 and the participants agreed that it was mostly fun.  We have a lot of unfinished things to do up there; most don't require any special skills, just enough time to do the job well.  It would be good to have somebody coordinating the tasks so we have enough crew for each task, enough tools and supplies, and so on.

== Double Glazed Windows ==  
The general plan will be to do work on Saturday and Monday, and take some time off on Sunday to go climb some peaks. Even reno crews need to have fun.


Study the plastic windows we have installed and see if they need more little plastic clips to hold them in place. Decide whether we need to apply caulking around the plastic. Clips, screws, caulking are up there.  A screwdriver with a tiny bit, would be good to have as a spare.  Fill any holes in the window frame.
This trip will be a great opportunity for new people in the club to have a good time in a beautiful setting. Not only will you get a chance to get into the mountains and scramble some peaks, you'll feel good having contributed to the maintenance of your hut. It is your hut, afterall, as a member of the VOC.


== Curtains ==
The [[Brian_Waddington_Hut#Map | trail in]] is fairly easy (VOC volunteers like you did a good job building it), so you don't have to be very tough to survive. There will also be a range of work which needs to get done, all of which is important, so you don't need to be a superhero to help out either. But if you happen to be fairly tough, somebody has to carry 5 gallons of paint and a chainsaw up to the hut - so we can use you too.


These are to keep the heat in the Hut during the long winter nights. The curtains are up there, they just need to be installed.
As for the peaks around the hut... if you're fast you can climb the 3 tallest Tolkien peaks in the same day and still have time for dinner. Gandalf, Aragorn and Shadowfax are all beautiful granite peaks, first climbed and named in the 70s by VOCers. Gandalf and Aragorn are both straightforward scrambles to get near the top of, with a difficult boulder problem to get onto their summit boulders (although Aragorn can be defeated with an easy shoulder-stand move, Gandalf is more tricky). Shadowfax has more complicated terrain, but can be hiked if you choose the right line, much line Peregrine to the south (Peregrine doesn't link up with the others as naturally, but I imagine you could climb all 4 if you were very fast and a bit late for dinner).  I've already been to the top of all these, so I don't mind going a bit slower and making sure new people get up something.  Check out some pictures from a similar trip two years ago [http://www.ubc-voc.com/gallery/v/bigbadbasstrombone/album_003/Brushing2/ here].

Here's a really nasty job.  The batteries are over ten years old and were for a project that is no longer happening. Drain the acid out of the batteries into plastic pop bottles or such, bag the batteries in plastic garbage bags, and haul them and the pop bottles out to the car.  There are two batteries, and they weigh 53 lbs each.  Mother Nature will be grateful.  Need to haul in some garbage bags, and some pop bottles.  May want to use Roland's old frame pack for this instead of getting battery acid all over your new Arcteryx.

This is a task where a large crew can be used, and you mostly stand around telling potty jokes.  First, try and find a good site for the new outhouse hole.  This has to be somewhere not too far away from the Hut, and not in the swamp that surrounds the Hut, somewhere that digging is good.  If we can find a good spot (unfortunately you need to dig to find how good the digging is), near the present spot, it should be possible to haul the outhouse over there intact.  If the spot is too far away, it will be necessary to take the outhouse apart and put it back together in the new location.  Finally you cover the old hole.

Phelix Reno Round 2

We got a lot of work done on Reno-1 and the participants agreed that it was mostly fun. We have a lot of unfinished things to do up there; most don't require any special skills, just enough time to do the job well.

The general plan will be to do work on Saturday and Monday, and take some time off on Sunday to go climb some peaks. Even reno crews need to have fun.

This trip will be a great opportunity for new people in the club to have a good time in a beautiful setting. Not only will you get a chance to get into the mountains and scramble some peaks, you'll feel good having contributed to the maintenance of your hut. It is your hut, afterall, as a member of the VOC.

The trail in is fairly easy (VOC volunteers like you did a good job building it), so you don't have to be very tough to survive. There will also be a range of work which needs to get done, all of which is important, so you don't need to be a superhero to help out either. There will be a pre-trip meeting on Thursday, July 30th, at 7pm in the clubroom. Let me know if you can't make it to the meeting but still want to come.

Trip

August 1st - 3rd, 2009
