==General Information==
==General Information==
This is a wilderness survival instructional trip that will take place the weekend of the November 21st, 2009.

The general idea is to drive into the backcountry and spend as much time as possible practicing skills, having discussions, and generally have a good time camping out. I would like to focus this trip on learning and practicing skills, so to maximize time there will not a self-propelled approach. This is not a competition or anything like the reality shows on TV. We will not be practicing the ridiculous stuff that Bear Grylls does. In fact we will probably make fun of him a lot.
This is an extra trip to accomodate the persons on the wait list of Intro to Wilderness Survival. Other people are also welcome. On Sat Nov 21 we will drive up Highway 99 to the Deeks Lake trail, hike up to Deeks Lake and sleep there, returning on Sun Nov 22.

The goal of this trip is to learn how to prepare for, avoid, and practice skills for short term wilderness survival. For example getting stuck out overnight on a day trip due to bad weather, injury or whatever.
The long-term weather forecast for Squamish predicts 90% and 40% P.O.P for Sat and Sunday, with 18-40mm aggregate rainfall. Be prepared for heavy rain on the hikes up and down and for sleeping in snow at the summit.

'''Topics we will discuss:'''
On a past November trip to Deeks Lake, snow near the lake was too deep to be walked on without snowshoes. If this group encounters impassable terrain, we will stop hiking and set up camp.
* Difference between survival and primitive living
*Outdoor/backcountry ethics
*Typical situations and scenarios you are likely to face
*What can kill you?
*Expected complications (survival vs normal camping)
*How to prepare for, avoid and minimize the magnitude of life threatening situations
*Examples and analysis of real situations
*Dealing with life threatening situations

==Survival Instruction==

'''Skills:'''
Instruction on survival techniques will not be as extensive as that provided on the concurrent Intro to Wilderness Survival 1 trip. Deeks Lake is in Cypress Provincial Park and fires are forbidden. A length of cord and some plastic sheeting will be provided for practice shelter building; we will still rely on tents for sleeping in. Attendees are welcome to bring survival equipment such as knives, compasses, water purification devices, emergency blankets etc. if they want to.
* Shelter building
* Fire starting
* Signaling
* First aid (probably not much time to go into depth)
* Navigation (probably won’t be much time to go into depth)

==What Do I Need?==

'''This trip IS for you if:'''
In addition to the general list below, please note specifically that you should bring equipment for rainy and snowy conditions. Bring good raingear, waterproof boots and gaiters, warm winter clothes including long johns, mittens, and toque, warm sleeping bag and pad. Bring at least three changes of dry clothes for the hike up, the night, and the hike down. Gear inside your backpack should be sealed in waterproof bags such as garbage bags so that rainwater falling on your backpack will not enter your gear. Snowshoes or crampons may be useful, but are not a requirement; as noted above if this group encounters impassable terrain, we will stop hiking and set up camp. Bring a large enough water bottle for several hours of hiking. When our bottles run out, water can be collected from Deeks Creek, melting snow, or Deeks Lake. Andrew has enough Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate tablets to purify 50L of water, which should be enough for the group. Bring other water purification equipment if you want to.
* Want to learn about and discuss wilderness survival
*You want to learn campcraft skills
* Don’t mind the possibility of being wet and cold for the weekend

'''This trip is NOT for you if:'''
* You can’t spend a weekend outdoors without hiking, skiing, climbing or some other athletic activity
* Are only interested in primitive living skills (like starting fire by friction and what-not) or the survival crap that plays on TV
* You are a hippie

I will bring a roll of plastic sheeting, duct tape and cord to practice shelter building with. I will also bring along some knives and saws and tinder for fire starting.
Please bring $2-$5 to help cover the cost of the provided materials.
It is up to participants to organize tent groups and food/stove groups amongst themselves, ideally using the space provided below.

The drive is along a graded Forest Service Road (Elaho) which is easily drivable in a car if there is not snow. The last few hundred metres when we turn off the main road will be rough but doable in a car without snow, probably impossible in a car if there is snow. Since there is a good chance of snow drivers will need decent tires and chains and should have proper attachment points on their car (front and rear) so I can pull you out if you get stuck.

Drivers please post your names here along with your vehicle capacity and departure info.

There will be no pre-trip meeting.

General Information

This is an extra trip to accomodate the persons on the wait list of Intro to Wilderness Survival. Other people are also welcome. On Sat Nov 21 we will drive up Highway 99 to the Deeks Lake trail, hike up to Deeks Lake and sleep there, returning on Sun Nov 22.
