Climbing-Specific Essentials No Matter What Rock Level
- UIAA-approved climbing harness**
- helmet (UIAA-approved climbing helmet preferred; next best is ski helmet, followed by bike helmet)**
- tube style belay device (ex: Black Diamond ATC, ATC Guide, Petzl Verso, Petzl Reverso)
- 1 locking carabiner for belaying (preferred style is pearbiner; ex: Petzl Williams Screwgate)
Non-Climbing Essentials No Matter What Rock Level
- day pack (any backpack of approx.. 15-30 liters volume for storing essential equipment)
- water (min. 1 L; though depends on typical daily intake)
- snacks (trail mix, Cliff bars, chocolate, etc)
- lunch
- extra layers (e.g windbreaker, middle insulating layers, etc)
- waterproof/water-resistant layers (if it’s planning on being rainy, avoid jeans and cotton t-shirts)
- sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat)
