Brew Hut Adventure
When
This trip will happen the weekend of October 3rd-4th. Our departure time is still to be determined, but expect it to be fairly early on Saturday morning. We will be back in Vancouver in the evening on Sunday.
Where
We will be going up to one of our four huts: the Brew Hut. It is roughly located across the Sea to sky highway form the popular Garibaldi Lake trail. Absolutely stunning views are guaranteed, without the immensly high human traffic of Garibaldi.
Who
You. Everyone is welcome. The trip is beginner friendly, which means that even if you have no prior outdoor experience, we will help you in every way so that you reach the destination and have a good time. In fact, this trip is intended as an introductory trip for new members of the club. You will have the chance to encounter other new and keen members and to complete a Workhike so that you can borrow gear for future trips.
Workhike
Taking care of the huts is a lot work that could not be accomplished without you, the members of the club. Although if you wanted to come just for the hike, you are more than welcome to, the purpose of this trip is to do some maintenance work on the hut in order to prepare it for the winter. One of the things that has to get done is the preparation of firewood for the hut stove. It will need to get hauled from the location of the old hut. Potentially, some could get chopped as well. Another important undertaking is the relocation of the outhouse, which we can try to do if we have the time.
What to bring
Essentials
- water bottle (at least 1L, 2L is better)
- headlamp and batteries
- sunscreen
- sun glasses and/or goggles
- map
- compass
- backpack
- pocket knife
- whistle
- lighter and/or waterproof matches
- first aid kit
- TP (natural substitutes may be available)
Clothing
- hiking boots
- warm jacket (fleece or down)
- long underwear (top and bottom)
- toque, mitts
- weatherproof jacket (goretex or coated nylon or softshell if weather is forecast to be sunny)
- weatherproof pants (goretex or coated nylon or softshell if weather is forecast to be sunny)
- gaiters
Food
- Lunch and snacks x2
- Breakfast x1
- Dinner x1
Sleeping
- sleeping bag
- sleeping pad
- ear plugs, because somebody will snore (optional)
Cooking and Eating
- bowl, spoon
- Stove with fuel. If using white gas, for each person bring 75 mL, 300mL to run each lantern
- there's a Coleman stove up there so if you just bring white gas (naphtha, Coleman fuel) you can cook on it but it might be a bit slow if there's 12 people all trying to use it.
- Pot and matching pot gripper
- Toothbrush
- water treatment
Pre-trip meeting
Officially, the pre-trip meeting will take place at 8pm in WOOD 6 right after the intro-night to which all the new members are strongly encouraged to come. At the meeting, we will sort out rides and food groups for those who do not have them yet. We will also take a look at the task list for the hut and try to get an idea as to what each person would want to work on. It is best if everyone attends the meeting, but if there are extenuating circumstances, email me and we will work something out.

| This is the sign up and organization page for an old trip. It already happened on 3-10-2009. Please do not sign up for it. |
Sign up for the trip here. Tentative trip limit is 12, as per how many the hut sleeps. By getting cozy, we could fit 15. If you wish to bring a tent and sleep in it, that is welcome too, although the ridge does get quite windy. If you will be in a tent, indicate on the signup list.
Participants
- Artem Bylinskii
- Ayoe Buhl, I would like to get a ride with you Matthew, if pick up is at UBC :-)
- Breanne Johnson
- Andrew Maurer, I'd also like to get a ride with you Matthew!
- Sarah Koch - I'd need a ride as well
- andrea bennett -- i'd like a ride! if no ride is available, is it possible to get to the trail using a bike/public transit?
- Jonathan Faille I would also need a ride.
- Emily Payne - I'll bring a 3-person tent for those overflows that may need it, and I MAY have access to a vehicle (which would mean spots for 4 more people, I will confirm this as soon in the next few days)
- Simon Chow
- Greg StAubin - I would love a ride
Beyond the limit, if you bring a tent, you will probably fit...
- Karlijn Noest, is also too late for registration, but would love to go!!
- Eva-Maria Weiss - too late for registration, too, but would really like to join
- Christina Gray
- Paul Smith - I am new and have car - can give ride up to 3 others, sounds fun

- Roland Burton, the Sturdy Trooper, and a tent (for 3?)
Rides
Please indicate here if you are able to drive for this trip and how many people you can accommodate.
- Roland leaving from near UBC. I will have spaces for four passengers but I've already offered rides to some people and I'm waiting to see if they want them, before putting the rest of the seats up for grabs. The best way to get a ride is to email the driver or phone the driver and ask for a ride. Once the driver says that you have a ride, chances are the driver won't bail and you're good to go. Or you can show up at the organizational meeting and see what's left. Often drivers decide to come at the last minute.
