Introduction

After TeleSchool [1] on January 15, you may want another lesson or two for more feedback and tips/cues/drills.
Phil Hammer (EOS) is a CANSI Level 2 telemark instructor and is offering free* tele lessons to help out the VOC (and to get more teaching experience).

Initial Dates and Locations

Monday evening, January 24^th, 2011: Mt. Seymour [free for women on Monday evenings. see: http://www.mountseymour.com/events for info on getting the coupon required. Does anyone know if this deal requires a guy to go with the gal?]

Monday evening, January 31^st, 2011: Mt. Seymour or Cypress (?)
We could shift to Cypress for the second session since it has better terrain if people want.

Future Sessions? We'll see how it goes. If we are having fun and people want another session or two, we could continue on the North Shore in February or even head up to Whistler for a day.

Costs

• The group would pay for Phil's lift ticket
  
• Your own lift ticket
  
• Gas for your driver.

Gear

You will need functional telemark skis, ski poles, and ski boots. Gear is available to rent from the club room, or from Mountain Equipment Co-op.

Student Sign-up

'Please indicate your skill level:' Never skied - Beginner - Beginner with an alpine skiing background - Intermediate - Advanced

[Note: Many drills we will do, even if they are basic, are very useful for skiers of all abilities. Even elite ski racers will go back to the basics and relook at 'simple' things like their stance, or the timing of initiating turns. I've found that some of the drills/cues I've been shown for teaching beginners are things that I now use when I'm playing with technique. So... it's fine to have people of different abilities within the same lesson group - the point of the lessons isn't to go fast, but to concentrate on technique. Obviously, it can become a problem when the range is toooo great so that the group can't move quite fast enough to keep the higher level people from waiting too much when we are just skiing.

1. Angela Willock - beginner (can snowplow, but only ski-ed once before - last week)
2. Ben Singleton-Polster (Intermediate can probably turn on everything at Seymour so would prefer to go to Cypress)
3. Shahbaz Tabyanian- strong intermediate
4. Kristin Sunde - intermediate
5. Mel Tan - beginner (tentative, injured myself at teleschool and pending on speedy recovery)
6. Angela Phung- beginner (not totally sure can commit this Monday)

Please email me [phammer@eos.ubc.ca] so I know who is definitely coming (there are a few maybes and we may lose more if the weather is crappy).
Looks good in terms of numbers for 2 groups on the 31st.

Time and Weather

Mt. Seymour: the women's deal starts at 6pm, normal evening rates start at 4pm
Lets plan to start lessons at 6:15 - but we may have a car or two going earlier.

Cypress: One evening rate starts at 4pm, cheaper still at 7pm.
For any Cypress evenings, lets decide when to start by email since people may want to go earlier to ski more... If not, we'd start right at 7pm.

Postponing: Lets hope we don't need to, but if it is pouring rain.... lets postpone to another time.

* We'll post here on the Monday morning with the call.... Forecast looks on the edge right now - heavy rain in the afternoon. We'll see what the forecast is in the morning.
