SHEET METAL WORK (HIGH PRIORITY)

  • Cut & install sheet metal on gable ends. This reqires tact, as scraps from one end go on the other end. Additional tact is required since we already cut a window hole in one of the pieces after mistaking it for a side wall piece. Good planning and creativity are necesary.
  • Install sheet metal corners. Maybe double the corners for strength.
  • Install metal flashing at ends of roof.
  • Cut hole in sheet metal roofing and install conical stovepipe thingy.(hole in sheathing is already cut)
  • Install ridge cap.
  • Cordless drills (and batteries) and a few tubes of caulking will need to be brought up for this work.

PAINT/WEATHERPROOF (HIGH PRIORITY)

  • Needs large tube of rubbery caulking
  • Needs industrial fast drying paint, use mis-tint or choose a colour.
  • Caulk around door and windows, inside and out, and sheet metal.
  • Paint window and door frames, two coats minimum.

DOWNSTAIRS (MEDIUM PRIORITY)

  • Nail on one remaining wall of pre-painted plywood sheeting.
  • Cut plywood pieces to go at top of walls for insulating top of walls. Insulate. Ideas on how to insulate and seal off this cavity are welcome. 2x8 blocking might be painful to cut and install, and there is nothing good to nail plywood onto.
  • Install blocking in cener of attic floor.
  • Haul up the bench #1, which is down at the old hut.
  • Assemble the downstairs sleeping bench #2.
  • Assemble the cooking counter.
  • Affix ladder to attic (may reuse the old brew ladder)

ATTIC WALLS (MEDIUM PRIORITY)

  • Insulate the attic, R12 on the roof and R20 on the gables.
  • Install vapor barrier.
  • Put on pre-painted plywood panels; will need to make 4 full-length cuts in the plywood (32' of ripping with a hand saw).

HEATER & STOVEPIPE (MEDIUM PRIORITY)

  • Need some sheet metal screws.
  • Attach box-like thingy to attic floor.
  • Cut hole through metal on roof .
  • Put up the pipe.
  • Put on the conical metal piece which fits over the roof metal, bend to fit ridge of roof.
  • Put on the cap to keep snow out of the chimney.
  • Using the stucco mesh (supplied), build a clothes drying apparatus.

PAINTING, FINAL COAT (MEDIUM PRIORITY)

  • Need several gallons of white paint for the walls.
  • Need a gallon of paint for the floor.
  • Industrial fast drying toluene based is good paint and if mis-tint the price is right, but you do not want to be in the Hut for the next 24 hours after painting.
  • Latex paint would smell better but will take a month to cure properly and may not work well in wet conditions.
  • Carry up the paint. Paint the walls.
  • Paint the floor seams to waterproof them. (2 coats, 2 liters paint is up there)
  • Paint both floors again, a "final" coat.
  • Brushes, rollers and paint thinner are on site.

MISCELLANEOUS (LOW PRIORITY)

  • Put rocks at the side of the Hut to keep wolverines from crawling under it.
  • A small front porch or stairs would be nice. We have the wood as there is some pressure treated lumber and deck board up there to concoct some sort of porch and/or stairs leading up to the door. There are also some nice joists in the old hut that would be great for making stairs. Alternatively, these could be made out of stone, but that's a lot of work.
  • Door ramp - it would be nice to add a small ramp to the door to make it easier to sweep dirt and snow out of the hut.
  • Woodshed
  • Coat hooks for hanging jackets, food, packs, etc. They need to be purchased and installed strategically.
  • Clean up any building debris, ie MicroBrew, and convert it into firewood.
