Jeff (Who lacks the skill to express this in any tense other than first person): Having taught a fairly large (>10) number of people to lead one-on-one, and having failed to teach people much of anything when attempting to instruct a larger group, I'm becoming quite convinced that the only good instructor:student ratio for rock climbing is 1:1.

On May 26, 2007, a number of instructor/student pairs will head up to Squamish and give/receive the intro to climbing. It will be radical.

To be an instructor, you need to have some idea what you're doing, and you'll need appropriate gear for whatever you think you're going to teach. You certainly don't need to be a particularly good climber or a real expert. You do need to know enough to keep you and someone totally new safe, though.

To be a student, you ideally have no outdoor rock experience. No indoor is fine too. A bit of outdoor is acceptable, but if there are more students than instructors, priority will go to people with no experience, as they need this more.

Transport: We throw as many people into cars as we have, and the rest can Greyhound.

Instructors

  1. Jeff Mottershead
  2. Matthew Carroll - with sufficient notice I can also take a CAN minivan for the day (6 passengers) which should work out cheaper than the greyhound
  3. Natasha Berntsen
  4. Mark Chui (can toprope belay and lead belay as long as you aren't ridiculously heavier than 130 lbs or so)
  5. Andrew McGechaen (no instructing experience)
  6. tiffany shen..the cat meow..but i will be in human form..and i have an unreliable car =) can teach...stuff
  7. Jill Nemeth - I can top rope belay, and with a quick revision, I can help people set up anchors, and teach them to rappel. What time do we leave, and who should I contact? I might have a car.

Students

  1. Sanaz F
  2. Rebecca Kostamo
  3. Matt Zieleman
  4. Mark Chui

Drivers and Passengers

  • Drivers (number of spots, leaving from)
  1. Jill Nemeth: 3 spots, leaving from Tsawwassen, so anywhere along the way there is fine, any suggestions? So far I have me, Andrea and Andrew, I have ideally one more spot, but two if you are into a super squishy/slow ride : ) and all AM radio baby : ).
