Template talk:Master gear list
usage
parameters
All parameters should be used numerically - i.e. hut=1, days=2, hike=1 to set them. All uses of this template should include at least one of the basic parameters (hike=1, ski=1, snowshoe=1, climb=1, scramble=1 or mountaineering=1)
- days
- The number of days of the trip. This will be used to calculate fuel and food amounts.
- hut
- adjusts fuel calculation based on staying in a hut.
- hike
- set to 1 for a basic hike
- ski
- set to 1 for a backcountry skiing trip
- climb
- set to 1 for a technical rock climbing trip
- scramble
- set to 1 for a rock scrambling trip
- mountaineering
- set to 1 for mountaineering. May be combined with climb=1.
- glacier
- Set to 1 for any trip involving glacier travel. This includes ski trips, snowshoe trips, as well as general mountaineering.
- snowshoe
- set to 1 for any snowshoe trip
- avalanche
- set to 1 to add avalanche equipment to any type of trip.
- no_avalanche
- By default ski trips and snowshoe trip gear lists will have avalanche equipment. This option will remove it for trips to suitably safe destinations.
- season
- adjusts fuel consumption and clothing lists for season. valid values are "winter" "spring" "summer" and "fall". This is a mandatory parameter, with a default value of "winter".
- melt
- adjusts fuel consumption to take account for melting snow in the summer.

Great idea Scott. Thanks. --Matthew 14:42, 29 January 2008 (PST)
I think the white gas calculation needs to differentiate between hut trips where melting snow to make water is unnecessary, e.g. Waddington, and hut trips where it is, e.g. Brew. The calculation assumes you need 50 ml pppn less if staying in a hut, but that would only seem to be correct when the hut has a (liquid) water source. I suppose for Brew there is the wood stove for melting water, but this isn't always the case. --Matthew 15:13, 29 January 2008 (PST)
- I find I need less fuel when melting snow in a hut because the air is warmer and there's no wind. That's why I have the fuel amount specified as 50mL less for huts even in mid winter. If there's a liquid water source you could go with even less fuel, but it's always good to be safe is case you can't find the water. Scott Nelson 22:23, 29 January 2008 (PST)
Defaults
We should figure out what all the defaults are and post them next to the parameters above... also, are any parameters mandatory? The true answer is "no" currently, because if you just type in {{master gear list}} you get the essentials, clothing and food (lunch and snacks x1). Scott Webster 11:58, 30 January 2008 (PST)
Old gear lists
Shall I retire the old nested template gear lists? I don't think anyone was using them anyway. Scott Nelson 15:19, 30 January 2008 (PST)
additions?
Things I would probably add to the list (for an overnight ski trip anyway...):
- Repair kit
- whistle
- lighter/matches
- TP (if there is an outhouse)
Possibly as optional:
- GPS/Altimeter
- Sun Hat (depends on the trip, could be important)
- telephone
- backpack (perhaps too obvious)
- summit/day pack
- bootie covers (worth mentioning?)
- foam pad for sitting on (worth mentioning?)
Just some thoughts, maybe you guys can add them using your template-guru skills if you think they are good ideas. I guess we want to keep the list fairly simple, but fairly comprehensive... not a trivial task. Scott Webster 23:44, 31 January 2008 (PST)
