Misty Ice Field Traverse 2009

This orphaned page is to help organize the trip being planned by Frances Sharpe, Evan Morris, Megan Anderson, Greta Raymont, Ben Singleton-Polster


Tasks

Done:

  • Direction of traverse - N to S
  • Our main contact while on the trip (for avi/weather updates, emergencies) - Christian Champagne. Evan/Greta to give Champagne a detailed trip plan.
  • Drop off - Evan booked a Van with Bob, will have to pick up Friday night.

Still to do:

  • Maps - Frances will get 1:20 000. E&G have the two 1:50000, Ben has one 1:50000. Missing 92G16. Evan will print some extra copies too at work.
  • Return transport - Ben to organize (possibly champagne to pick us up)
  • Organise boat ride - Ben
  • Plan backup plans and escape routes
  • Sat phone rental - Frances
  • Research no.s to call on sat phone for weather

Cooking Stuff

Meal Requirements

  • The current plan is for 8-9 days which requires:
  • 8 Breakfasts (all cold!)
  • 9 Lunches
  • 8 Dinners - must be vegetarian
  • Emergency food? (i.e. cliff bars)

All dinners will be shared!

Dinner 3 - Frances - Burritos (probably should be first meal?)

Trip Plan

Transportation

Getting there: Bob Lai is driving a rental van with our sorry asses in it to the Chief Paul FSR. Leaving early Sat Apr 25.

Getting home: Boat: - need to book the Pitt Lake boat ride - Ben is organizing

Also Lara and Bram researched the traverse but bailed at the last minute due to weather. Here's Lara's intended route:
Misty would be Thu-Tue (6 days), plan to go from Chief Paul Creek FSR to the Icemantle Glacier to Snowcap Lakes to Snowcap Icefield, Misty Icefield, Stave Glacier, Terrarossa Lake & Glacier to either (1.) ski out along an alpine ridge to the North to Fire Creek FSR, (2.) ski out to the North and go down all the way down to Glacier Lake/Snowcap Creek FSR (back to starting point), or (3.) ski out South to the North Sloquet "FSR" (bushwack likely). Usually (see Baldwin guide) the traverse is done to Pitt Lake, but this seems longer and doesn't bring us back to the same starting point...
