Synopsis

Round 1 of Brian Waddington Hut renovations this summer. Drive up Friday evening or Saturday morning early, haul in some stuff, do some work, spend night at Hut, do some more work, hike out, drive home.

The hut is in a fantastic location, and with the new trail finished last year it's easily accessible. Sadly, the hut has been slowly accumulating mildew over the years due to a design flaw in the roof. This summer we're going to fix that, with two workhikes - one to get the hut into a state where it will be drying effectively (fix roof, kill mildew, etc.), and a second to paint it. They're spaced out so the wood has a chance to thoroughly dry inbetween.

Date

June 13-14, although Roland may be interested in staying up there longer if there is interest.

Optional pre-trip meeting Wednesday June 10th, at the intersection of Tolmie and the ocean (ie. Spanish Banks, frisbee) at 7pm.

To Do List (this round)

  1. Clear boulders from the road so it's passable by high clearance 4x4s. If we drove up Friday evening and camped, we could spend early Saturday morning trundling boulders off the road. The slide is already barely passable; another hour of work should make it good.
  2. Vanquish the mildew. This involves Behr #62 mildew killer and Behr #63 wood preparation concentrate, a scrubbing brush with a long handle, plus maybe rubber gloves. I think we apply #62 sparingly, then wash it off with clear water from the stream, then apply #63. Anybody have experience with this? We have already hauled up the #62, #63, two brushes, and a long handle.
  3. Double glaze the windows. We need to haul up some screws and clips for attaching the windows. We have already hauled in the 40 lbs of Lexan.
  4. Fix the roof. The roof already got mostly fixed during a fast-job in the fall. We've just got to touch it up all the way. Will involve lots of expanding foam, asphalt caulking, and some Al sheet.
  5. (possibly) install Roland's Solar Device (TM). If we don't have enough spare people to install the solar air heater component, we can at least install the fan component, so that it will be sucking air through the Hut and drying it in preparation for Round 2: painting. Roland is the Solar Device Committee.
