Line's trip to Lake Elsay

The Plan

We will drive to Mt Seymour parking lot, follow the main Mt. Seymour trail to the junction with Mt. Elsay trail. The people who feel like it can climb the pumps and/or Mt. Seymour, the rest can have a long relaxing lunch. In the afternoon we will follow the Elsay lake trail to the Elsay lake cabin and take a swim in the lake before dinner. We will be sleeping on the hut floor (it is not very big) or in tents depending on how many we are. If we feel good on Sunday we will continue to Vicar lake and climb Mt. Bishop from here. Mt Bishop is the highest point on the divide between Seymour Water Reservoir and Indian Arm, so it should have nice views. We will return Sunday afternoon along the same route.

Who can come?

This trip is for everyone but mainly for beginners. If you have never hiked or camped before this is a great place to start. However there is opportunities to climb different peaks on the way making it more challenging for people with lots of energy and/or experience.

Dates

Trip: July 11-12 Early Saturday morning to late Sunday night, weather dependant.

Pre-trip meeting: Wednesday July 8 at Tolmie at 7:00. Not mandatory if you know what you're doing - but if I haven't heard from you before the trip meeting I'll assume you're not actually coming.

What should you bring

Clothes

• 1 set of non-cotton clothes
• 1 additional warm thing (fleece / down jacket)
• rainjacket / pants (if it is supposed to rain. Otherwise a nice light breathable softshell would be better)
• toque
• gloves
• boots (make sure they don't eat you feet)
• sun hat
• gaiters (not required, but there might be snow on some parts of the trail)

Shelter

• sleeping bag (a summer bag is probably good, depending how warm you think you sleep)
• sleeping pad
• maybe tent (will determine on trip meeting)

Miscellaneous

• Sunscreen
• Headlamp
• lip balm
• sunglasses
• camera
• bug net and/or bug juice
• Toilet Paper
• Toothbrush
• Lighter
• Bearspray (optional - with such a large, probably noisy, group I'd be highly surprised if any self-respecting bear would go anywhere near us)
• First aid supplies (Line will bring her first aid kit, but if you want to bring some of your own, particularly moleskin, that's OK. Not bringing any is also OK - there will be enough to go around)

Gear

• ski/trekking poles (poles are highly awesome for hiking, specially if your knees hurt going down hill)

Food

• stove + pot + fuel + lighter (or be friendly)
• Plastic thing to eat out of (old yogurt container? Or something fancier)
• spoon
• Lunch, Dinner, Breakfast, Lunch
• Water (ability to carry 2 - 3L, depending on your size).
• Water purifier drops and/or filter

Luxury (optional)

• songbook
• 1 pair extra socks
• sandals for camp/creek crossing
• tin whistle / recorder / Ukulele
• Alcohol
• ?

More about Elsay by Roland

Elsay Lake is behind Mt Seymour and sometimes involves an interesting creek crossing. There's an "emergency shelter" at the far end of the lake. This is not a location where you expect to find crowds; so much so that there are signs of recent campfires (though generally forbidden in Provincial Parks).

If you get bored while up there, an interesting variation is to return on the clockwise side of the lake, where the trail is not. You may end up crossing interesting avalanche debris which may have come down from Mt Elsay.

This is a good destination for a semi-Ninja (meaning you don't have an assigned camping pad and you don't have to pay) camping trip.
